England all-rounder Paul Collingwood will have keyhole surgery on a knee injury after the Cricket World Cup .The 34-year-old has been suffering for much of the winter and was left out of England’s side for the group-stage wins against South Africa and West Indies. He is due to play for Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League but could now miss at least the first half of the tournament, which starts on 8 April.

Collingwood has retired from Tests but continues in limited-overs cricket . He ended his Test career after making 83 runs in six innings during England’s successful Ashes campaign and has managed only 61 runs in four innings at the World Cup.

The Durham player featured in his side’s draw with India and shock defeat by Ireland but was dropped for the victory over South Africa and, after returning for the Bangladesh win, was again left out for the make-or-break win against West Indies.

England face co-hosts Sri Lanka in the quarter-finals on Saturday, with the semi-finals taking place on 29-30 March and the final in Mumbai on 2 April. Collingwood remains captain of the Twenty20 side which beat Australia to claim England’s first limited-over tournament triumph in the Caribbean last May. New Delhi, March 20 [AFP] : Ian Bell believes England’s unpredictability means they are a side none of their rivals will want to face in the knockout stages of the World Cup.

England have been involved in several thrilling matches at the tournament. They tied with co-hosts India and beat a highly fancied South Africa yet lost to both Ireland and Bangladesh in the group stage.

And the Ashes-winners and World Twenty20 champions were on the brink of elimination from the World Cup when the West Indies, chasing 244 for victory, were 222 for six at Chennai’s Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.

Yet England took four wickets for three runs to stay in the tournament and now face a quarter-final against either Sri Lanka or Pakistan.

“In the last 12-18 months, when we’ve had matches we’ve got to win we’ve come out well,” England batsman Bell said on Sunday.

“I’m sure there are a lot of teams around that don’t really want to play England – because they don’t quite know what they’re going to get at the minute.”

Bell admitted England had not played to their full potential at the World Cup but warned their best was yet to come.

“If we win all three matches, we’ll be able to look back on one of the best (northern hemisphere) winters of all time,” the 28-year-old said.

“Three games, and we can win a World Cup.

“It’s been pretty incredible, tiring and a little bit frustrating that we haven’t quite put it all together. We’ve played six games here and still haven’t got it all right at the same time.”

Bell said the Ashes winners had shown a huge desire to win their crunch match against the West Indies and believed they could beat anyone on their day.

Ever since England lost Kevin Pietersen to injury early in this tournament, Matt Prior has reverted to opening the innings alongside captain Andrew Strauss.

There are many who feel Bell, currently in at number four, would be a better option and he said: “One-day cricket is a great place to go up at the top of the order, with the field up.

“It’s a good place to go out and bat, so I’d be really desperate to do that.

“But if I had to stay at four and keep to my role for the team, I’m happy to do that as well.”

Bell, who has so far managed two fifties at this tournament, said: “I feel in great touch. But it’s been hard work scrapping for runs coming in in the middle when it’s been turning a lot.

“My role has been to play spin well, and it hasn’t quite happened. But I still feel very confident about my game.

“I don’t want to die wondering at this stage of the tournament. I want to be as positive as possible.”

March 17, 2011 : Today was a match between England vs West Indies in the ICC World Cup 2011. This was the 36th match of the league. The match was played at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Team England won he toss and elected to bat. England batsmen failed to bat for 50 overs as the Windies bowlers struck at regular intervals and it was mixed performance with the bat. Team Captain Andrew Stratuss and Matt Prior opened for England team. On the first ball of the ninth over West Indies pacer Andre Russell struck a lethal blow to send opener Matt Prior home. The good lenght ball that curved in slightly crashed into his stumps to dismiss him on 21. England lost their first wicket on 48/1. There was more in store as Russell struck again to despatch skipper Andrew Strauss in the 12th over. The short ball lured him for a pull but the top edge sent him as Chris Gayle took a fine catch at mid-wicket. He fell for 39 and England fell to 79/2. Jonathan Trott made the highest 47 scores in 38 balls. Luke Wright scored 44 in 57 balls. James Tredwell run out at 9 runs. Tim Bresnan scored 20 and remained unbeaten. Total 243 on this pitch will certainly be competitive but could have been so much better. West Indies paceman Andre Russell claimed four wickets as England were all out for 243 in their World Cup Group B match at the MA Chiadmbaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai on Thursday.

West Indies openers Devon Smith and Chris Gayle went on charge right away. Gayle was especially brutal on Chris Tremlett hitting fours and six off him at will. No doubt the pacers were hit across the park, but not the spinners as off-spinner James Tredwell, playing in place of paceman James Anderson, hit back to claim Gayle with an LBW. The Windies utilised their review and ended up wasting it. Gayle scored 43 off 21 balls decorating his innings with eight fours and one six. England lost their first wicket on 58/1 in the 7th over. But Tredwell was hungry for more and he went ahead and had Darren Bravo on 5. A slight edge was nicely taken by skipper Andrew Strauss a few inches off the turf. West Indies fell to 91/3 on the last ball of the 13th over. All among the middle order batsmen exept Andre Russell were able to make good score. Andre Russell scored the highest 49 out of 46 balls. Chasing 244, West Indies are 223/9 in 43.3 overs with D Bishoo and Sulieman Benn at the crease against England in their World Cup Group B match at the MA Chiadmbaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai on Thursday.
